Maybe I'm in the minority here but when I fantasize about James it's always about one of the characters he's played, since I haven't a clue what he's like in real life. Here's who my fantasies revolve round (the list isn't in order of importance:
Edward Grey (Secretary) Douglas Draper (I Witness) John Parker (The Stickup) Joel Campbell (The Watcher) Alan Shore (The Practice)
I'd be interested to know if anyone else does this and if so with which characters.

Good list gonegirl! Yes, I do this a lot because, as you say, I don't really know how he'd really behave in bed.
Yet I have fantasized about him from some of his earlier interviews, too.
I mean his name might be James Spader sometimes in the fantasies but he is usually in character.
I fantasize about everyone on your list, as well as: Stevenson Lowe (Curtain Call) Dr. Werner Ernest (Critical Care) Graham Dalton (SLV) James Ballard (Crash) Lee Woods (2 Days in the Valley) Julian Rome (Alien Hunter) Daniel Elsberg (The Pentagon Papers) Max Baron (White Palace) Dr. Daniel Jackson (Stargate) Ray Reardon (Dream Lover) Stewart Swinton (Wolf) The Man (Driftwood) Nick Vanzant (Supernova) Dr. Roger Klink (Speaking of Sex) probably William Ashbury in (Shadow of Fear) Alan Shore (The Practice, BL season 1)
I had a dream where I came to my sister's house, and there was this gorgeous guy there. I said to everyone that he was James Spader. I went to sit on his lap, and we were just making out in front of everyone. As you can see I have fantasized about most of his characters.

Mr Grey and Alan Shore (The Practice) are my top two fantasy characters though I put together bits from lots of other appearances to create this lovely sexy perfect man!

As much as I love some of his movie characters, most of my fantasies are of Alan Shore, the naughty one. There is no denying the sex appeal of him, not just in The Practice, but all of Boston Legal. He "oozes".

Well, I think it's no secret that Stargate inspired my novel, so definitely some fantasy about Daniel Jackson.

Spaderific, I agree about William Ashbury (Shadow of Fear) - sinister but definitely sexy.

I quite like the geeky guy in "Criminal Minds" (I think gonegirl knows who I mean). There was one episode where the team was checking out a storage locker where a guy had left a lot of writing about tying people up. The team were very earnestly muttering about finding the serial killer (annoyingly, and predictably, there actually was one).
A random and naughty thought crept into my head where a very seductive woman sidled up to geeky scientist guy and said, "Hi, do you want to tie me up?"

That 'geeky' guy, as you say, used to be a top high fashion model before becoming an actor. He walked the runways for the likes of Marc Jacobs, Burberry, Louis Vuitton. I knew he had been a model, but had to look up who he modeled for.

Mr Grey and Alan Shore (The Practice and Boston Legal) are my top fantasy characters.
By the way, I had a dream about him just last week.
I sat about a table alone, may be in a cafe. Suddenly, James showed up, and was just sitting beside me. We looked at each other, and perhaps I was too excited, I bursted into laughter with him. I was laughing in the dream, and the laughing still went on when I was waken by this dream.
I think this was silly, I really should have done something else rather than just laughing.

I never knew that! I think I looked him up on imdb but can't remember what it said . I think his name is Matthew Gray Gubler.
It's always weird when you've only seen someone in one particular role, because it is harder to separate the actor/actress from the role. Although sometimes it turns out you have seen them before and not realised! (I used to be a "Dawson's Creek" fan, but did not recognise James Van Der Beek when he had a guest role in "Criminal Minds"!)

I do find the "geeky guy" in Criminal Minds curiously attractive but he's much too young for me.
There are limits.
