BOSTON LEGAL - "Legal Deficits" - Brad Chase pushes for an immediate trial after he is arrested for impersonating an FBI officer and assaulting a priest during the rescue of a kidnapped child. Shirley Schmidt is worried about how this case may reflect on the firm and is reluctant to consent to Brad's request for the erratically-behaving Denny Crane to be the lead attorney. Meanwhile, Alan Shore tries to bail out his secretary, Melissa (Marisa Coughlan), who is in serious credit card debt, and seeks the assistance of the firm's quirky but brilliant bank and finance genius, "Hands" Espenson (Christian Clemenson), on "Boston Legal," TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET), on the ABC Television Network.

Okay, I'm the first one to comment on last night's ep, I guess.
The episode was a nice showcase for Shirley after Candice's GG nomination. Even though the previews made it sound like Denny would lead Brad's defense, it was really SS.
But enough about that. For me, the episode was pretty much overshadowed by the few seconds of all-too-rarely-seen-these-days Alan angst in the very last shot - the moment when he took that last swig on the balcony (a shot I watched several times, including a couple in slo-mo ... mmmm).
So .... why was Alan so pensive?
At first, I thought he might be concerned about Denny seeming a little more senile than usual. Or that maybe he was just getting a little tired of Denny's predictable comments about wanting to shoot clients, etc. And maybe that was part of it.
But I watched the whole balcony scene again, and he was def not in his usual quippy "isn't it great to be us" mood with Denny even when he arrived. So I don't think it really had anything to do with Denny.
I think that he was really craving a little "what do you call it ... sex". Or at least female companionship. After all, he'd succeeded in winning over Melissa (even without getting her to bed, which he doesn't want ... just the knowledge that he COULD). She'd just referred to him as sexy after earlier equating him with her father (ouch, you could tell THAT one stung our Alan). So maybe he was thinking of Tara. I just hope he didn't end up calling 1-800-LIZZIE.
Anyway, I apologize if it seems like I'm dismissing the rest of the episode (which I liked), but that one little scene had me thinking about it all night and again this morning. Amazing how the simple act of JS taking a drink can have that effect on me.

Hi, Moss! Do you (or anybody) think anything could happen between Alan and Melissa? I sort of wrote it off because she seems to be too much of an airhead for him, but you never know. He certainly gave her a look as she walked down the hall after thanking him. So maybe at the end (sorry, but that scene fascinated me too much...) he was really thinking of HER? Just a thought.
I do have to agree with you (and Melissa) that Alan's tearing apart the good-old-boy lawyer for the credit card company was wonderful stuff. And what better target!?
Christian Clemenson's part (as "Hands" ... why do they call him "Hands"? ) was pretty funny as well. He had all the facts in his head, but you could tell he wished he could use them as well as Alan Shore does. ktdids said in the other thread on this episode that Clemenson and JS are old friends. I just happened to watch Bad Influence yesterday, which he was in as well.

I think "Hands" is autistic, most likely with the variant "aspergers's syndrome" He was socially inappropriate, (hands on pants, walking away in the middle of a conversation, no hand shaking, uncomfortable in meetings) yet brillliant in his work--tell-tale signs. I wished they had actually mentioned this disorder to bring it into the limelight and show the viewing audience one example of the disorder. But I am happy that this type of character was introduced at all. Hats off to Dek for his writing in bringing all sorts of characters to the screen.
Yes Moss Papi was brilliant, it seems some of his "Shoreness" was back in this ep. The way he tore up that hick lawyer was fabulous!! and using the hick's own words against him. --just like he used Eugene's own words against him in his closing in "the Case against Alan Shore" in TP 8. This is the AS I fell deeply in love with! Boy I sure want him to get rid of my credit card debt now. Since I have no money, I would gladly repay him with sexual favors And now Melissa realizes how "hot" her boss is--too late Bimbo, he's probably crossed you off the list by now.
Loved how SS tore into that corupt priest and showed him for what he is --a HYPOCRIT! The way he protected the homosexual pedophile does lead one to question the priest's motives. And SS jumped right in there YOU GO SHIRLEY!!!
Great episode! And yes Moss Papi was particularly handsome this evening.
I do like the balcony scenes but I am way tired of the cigars and alcohol.
